If you look over national news feeds, you will probably see multiple places that have been hit by flooding recently. Could it happen in Sugar Land ? Flash floods are the most common weather disaster in the nation.
In honor of FEMA’s National Preparedness Month (NPM), we would like to share five flood disaster preparedness tips for you and your family.
- #1. Create a Plan – Make sure that you have a family emergency plan. Once the plan is created, rehearse and review it with your family. To help our clients with this step, Paul Davis has a Get a Plan form you can print using the link at the end of this post.
- #2. Develop an Emergency Kit – Here are a few of the items you should include: a gallon of water per person, a first aid kit, singal whistle, battery-powered radio, dust masks, moist towelettes, garbage bags, pliers, and local maps.
- #3. Clean Your Gutters – Your gutters become very important during heavy rains. Make sure they are free of debris and drains are unclogged.
- #4. Look at Flood Maps – It’s important to know if you are in a flood area so you can get proper insurance. To look at flood maps in Sugar Land , click on the link at the bottom of the page.
- #5. Understand Flood Terms – Know the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning. When a flood watch is issued, it means that there is a chance a flood will happen in your area. A flood warning is saying that a flood is headed your way and that you need to be prepared.
